(Wind Band Press)

For more than 55 years, Crystal Records has been producing high-quality recordings of classical music (LPs and CDs) in the United States.

To find out what goes on behind the scenes, we interviewed the president, Mr. Peter Christ.

———-
1. First of all, I would like to give a brief introduction about you personally to our readers. Would you tell me about your position in the company and what you do? Also, would you tell me about where and how you grew up, and where you learned what you know?

Peter: In short, I am owner and president. I started the company in 1966 because I felt at that time the major labels were not paying attention to instrumental chamber music and solos. I grew up in Los Angeles and went to college at University of California at Angeles and San Diego State University. My oboe teacher was Bert Gassman, principal oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I played oboe in most of the freelance orchestras n L.A. as well as extra and first oboe many times with the L.A.Philharmonic. I played regularly with the movie studio orchestras in Los Angeles. I started the Westwood Wind Quintet in 1959. During all that time the group was very active in concerts and recordings. I moved from Los Angeles about 20 years ago, but continued playing with the Westwood Wind Quintet, which continued performing and recording.

2. Would you tell me how Crystal Records was established (why did you start the business)?

Peter: As mentioned above, I started the company in 1966 because I felt at that time the major labels were not paying attention to instrumental chamber music and solos.

As a professional oboist and founder of the Westwood Wind Quintet, I had been frustrated trying to find recordings of the music that I loved. The major record labels (there were very few independent labels) had a few of their “stars” on a smattering of instruments, but they were seemingly not very interested in the less common solo instruments or ensembles, or in adding to their rosters some of the fabulous players in the major orchestras around the world. When one walked into a record store (which is how most people bought records back then), it was almost impossible to find a choice of flute, oboe, horn, or trumpet albums, and it was impossible to find tuba or trombone. Much of the repertoire that I and my friends were playing was nonexistent, as far as the major labels and the record stores were concerned.

I had gotten the recording “itch” a few years earlier, when Columbia Records, urged by Robert Craft, produced a Schonberg series, on which they included the Schonberg Wind Quintet. The Westwood Wind Quintet had performed this several times, and Craft asked my group to do the recording. Rehearsals at Igor Stravinsky’s house added to the excitement for me, still in my early 20s, and when the record came out, it was thrilling to hear it on radio stations around the country. I was hooked on recording and wanted to do more of the wonderful ensemble pieces that were unknown to the general music-loving public. A few letters to major record labels proved that they were not interested in this type of music, and a few calls to some of the players I knew in the Los Angeles area proved that there were others who wanted to record and let the public know about the music they were playing. Among my peer group I was fortunate to know players who would become some of the most respected on their instruments. With more enthusiasm than knowledge of the industry, I started Crystal Records.

3. In the process of making a CD, i.e., recording, editing, and binding, would you tell me about your company’s particular concerns, attention to detail, and rules?

Peter: We are very concerned with quality in all aspects.

4. Would you tell me about any particularly memorable recording episodes for your company or you personally?

Peter: The most memorable would have to be any of the Westwood Wind Quintet’s Reicha recordings. AND, the recording of God Created Great Whales by Hovhaness, which we recorded in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Actually because of the care we put into them, all of the recordings that I produced are very memorable to me.

5. With the worldwide wave of streaming services, it seems that the number of CDs sold is decreasing considerably. Does your company have any plans to reduce the sales of physical discs in the future? Or do you plan to release music in the form of memorial year discs or vinyl (LP records) as is popular in American rock and pop music?

Peter: Streaming has definitely cut into CD sales, but there are still many people who like a physical CD. We are still producing CDs but not as many as previously. We are not doing any LPs but are gradually repressing some of our older LPs as CDs.

6. I have the impression that you have put particular effort into recording the works of Alan Hovhaness and Anton Reicha. They may not be so well known in Japan. What is your impression of the appeal of their works?

Peter: Yes, we have a particular interest in Hovhaness and Reicha.

In 1975 another milestone occurred when trumpet player Tom Stevens suggested that Crystal do an all-Hovhaness album as part of a Ford Foundation grant. In this way I was introduced to some of the most beautiful and unusual music I had ever encountered and met the composer, a warm, remarkable man. When Crystal was later offered the chance to purchase the Poseidon catalog of Hovhaness music, all conducted or supervised by the composer, I jumped at the chance. Since then we have recorded many more Hovhaness works and I am pleased to have had a part in reintroducing this marvelous music and extending the popularity of this extraordinary composer.

Since its inception in 1959, the Westwood Wind Quintet has been performing the quintets of Anton Reicha for some of its concerts. A few years ago, Charles David Lehrer edited the original publications of these 24 quintets and made parts and scores that he put on the International Double Reed Society web site. I was delighted to find these and contacted “Chick” Lehrer, who convinced me that it would be a grand project for the Westwood Wind Quintet to record all 24 of the quintets, a feat that had only been done once (many years ago) and never by an American ensemble. In working on the Reicha quintets, I have found Reicha to be even more profound and enjoyable than I had previously thought. These are fantastic pieces of music by a major composer of the period. They are not just good pieces by an average composer; they are excellent pieces by a composer of the first rank. They have been described as “symphonies in miniature” with “some of the finest music ever penned” (Ritter, Audiophile Audition). I am pleased to say that we finished recording all of these wonderful works and all 24 are now available on 12 CDs.

Both composers are spectacular and their works have a lot of appeal. The 24 Reicha Woodwind Quintets are the pinnacle of woodwind quintet writing. We have performed some of them on thousands of concerts. They always go over very well for an audience. We recorded them because we felt the only other recording of all 24 quintets did not do them justice. They are sometimes treated as flippant works. They are not “flippant”. They are vey serious works with lovely melodies and wonderful voicing and counterpoint. What the Beethoven String Quartets are to strings, the Reicha Woodwind Quintets are to woodwinds. They are like symphonies. And, they have a good sense of humor.

About Hovhaness, let me just add that his orchestral music is immediately gratifying, possibly some of the most accessible and beautiful music ever written. As far as I can tell, everyone who hears it loves it, unless they have a very closed mind.

Sales of Hovhaness and the Reicha Quintets are very good.

7. Lastly, please give a message to the wind band / classical music fans in Japan.

Peter: We thank you your continuing interest in the many instrumental recordings in the Crystal Records catalog.
