2. Golden Hearts Publications

[English]
1. First of all, would you tell me about your background, where and how you grew up, what made you started as a composer?

I started playing the cornet in primary school, and then trumpet, and I was very enthusiastic about band and band music in general. One day I heard a really cool piece of music played by a symphony orchestra, and that made me want to arrange it for wind band, and after a few of these self-arranged projects, I started becoming interested in creating my own music, and that’s how my composition journey began!

2. The Golden Hearts Publications sells your works for concert band. Would you tell me what charm you feel about concert band?

I think the concert band medium has great potential for colouristic writing. So many instruments with their own families!

3. As a composer, if there is a work that became a turning point in your life, would you tell me the episode about that work?

I cannot pinpoint a single work, I think there have been many works that contributed to putting me where I am today, but perhaps it was a little dance piece that was played at a masterclass that caught the attention of one conductor, who then asked me to expand it into a suite and then it was conducted by Johan de Meij!!!! That could have been THE moment! That work is called “Dances in Flight” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kmFA0WK_OQ

4. I think that there have been various things in your activities so far. As a composer, would you tell me about the episode of “The best moment”.

Hmm…I think the best moment so far is having Steven Mead (who I believe is popular in Japan!) hearing one of my trumpet solo works, and wanting to play it! He has since played the piece “Variations on Chan Mali Chan” multiple times around the world!

5. On the other hand, would you tell me about the moment when you were most depressed or when you were most troubled and how you recovered from it or how you faced it.

When I was in university, actually my greatest interest was in conducting, not composition..I tried to audition for a conducting masterclass, I didn’t get selected, but I opted to go and watch the masterclass as an observer. Then I realised how far behind I am in conducting, and that really shattered my dream. I could only turn to my 2nd biggest interest at that point, which was composition, for solace. But in the end, I’m able to write more than if I had become a conductor!

6. Would you tell me what you are trying to compose, what you are careful about, and what you put emphasis on.

Right now, I am writing an interesting piece that slowly gets harder and harder, and bands can play it till they reach a point they feel is too difficult. When I compose, I take great care in making sure the music is always going somewhere, and I emphasise a lot on developing material and clear structures!

7. You are also a trumpet player. Would you tell me what kind of experience you gain from your work as a player and how you use it in your composing.

I cannot say this enough, but to be a good composer, being an active player is SO IMPORTANT! As a player, one learns so much about composition from other pieces that we play, and at the same time we start seeing what is easy to rehearse, what is difficult to rehearse, it is very useful as a player to see the practicalities of pieces. It allows you to see composition from the players’ perspectives, and that is very important to creating music that is efficient!

8. Would you tell me what do you know and feel about the Singapore wind music scene?

There are many bands in singapore. Almost every secondary school, junior college and university has a band. Likewise there are many community bands for working people who still want to play in a band as a hobby! However, the only professional wind band in Singapore is the one in the military. Some composers such as Benjamin Yeo, James Swearingen and Satoshi Yagisawa are very popular!

9. Your name is not yet widely known in Japan, but you are highly regarded worldwide. Would you give advice to young Japanese composers and composers who want to work across the border in the world.

My advice to composers is to connect with the world, explore composers from other countries, and be open minded! And always find new ways to write wind band music, and find new sounds for it!
