Wind Band Press

6. Golden Hearts Publications

– 吹奏楽:「月の生活(LE LIVRE DES MERVEILES DU MONDE)」、「第一交響曲(FIRST SYMPHONY)」、「火の踊り(THE FIRE DANCE)」、「銀の砂のフレット(DE SABLE FRETTE D’ARGENT)」…

「アナトリケイディシ(ANATOLI KAY DYSI) (クラリネット)」、「ドミトリーの踊り(DMITRI’S DANCES) (ユーフォニアム)」「プールとドール(DE POURPRE ET D’OR)」と「バンドの誕生(BIRTH OF A BAND)」 (吹奏楽), など…

(Wind Band Press)

[English]

Mr. Jean-Philippe Vanbeselaere is a French composer whose works are published by Golden Hearts Publications in Japan, an sheet music publishing business operated by ONSA as well as Wind Band Press.

He has contributed many informative columns to Wind Band Press.

This time, I asked him a few questions to highlight his aspect as a composer.

1. First of all, would you tell me about your background, where and how you grew up, what made you started as a composer?

I was born in the north of France in a little town (Saint-Omer) where the Culture was very important (museums, national conservatory of Music, theater, etc.). I began music when I was 5 and I began violin studies when I was 6. Five years later, I began Saxophone studies (continuing in parallel my Violin Studies).
During my studies in this national music school and, after, in conservatories of Music (music theory, harmony, orchestration, conducting, …) I tried some little experiences of compositions (short pieces for duo, trio or quartet) and orchestrations from piano to orchestra. This works was performed during concerts of students…
The second motive (and desire) to compose was in relation with my position of instrument player inside chamber music groups and orchestras : a fabulous occasion to perform classical repertoire but also to discover some creations.
So, in 1999, I decided to send my first compositions for Wind Band to a french publisher. Two months later, my first composition was published.

2. You have published works in a variety of compositions. I have the impression that you are particularly interested in wind band music. Would you tell me what you find attractive about wind band music?

When I was young and during many years, I saw several concerts of the Community Band of my native town : I was really fascinated by the sound of this orchestra, really different compared with chamber or symphonic orchestras. Also, repertoire was different and, naturally, I wanted to play with my Saxophone inside it !
I began to play in this Wind Band when I was 14 and I never stop until I change of region for my job. Then, I always played in the Wind Band of the Conservatory of Music where I was Saxophone teacher.
Always interested by the Worldwide of winds, I get better twenty four years ago and obtained my State Diploma of Conducting, with the Wind Band specialization.
Since, I never stopped to conduct Wind Bands in France and abroad !

3. As a composer, if there is a work that became a turning point in your life, would you tell me the episode about that work?

In 2004, I’d signed up for an international contest of composition for Wind Bands. Among the 200 compositions selected, I won after 4 performances in live (selections, quarter-final, semi final & final) the second price with “Around the World”. The jury members went from USA, Russia, China, Belgium & France and they all decided to perform my composition in their countries. It was really a big success and this piece was performed after (and still now) in a lot of countries “around the world”.
Then, my composition was selected to be the main piece for wind band competitions in France during several years.
I had also the big pleasure in 2014 to perform it in Japan (Takamatsu), conducting a professional military band !

4. I know that what you want to express changes from work to work, but please tell me about what you want to convey as an artist throughout your works to date.

The main message that I want to spread through my compositions is the pleasure : the pleasure for the musicians to perform my compositions, the pleasure for conductors to make work my compositions and the pleasure for the audience to listen my compositions.
There are also another situation when you have a commission for a soloist or for an orchestra : I search always to match with the desires of the commissionner while keeping my inspiration and my writing style.

5. If there are works by other composers or arrangers that have strongly influenced your composition or arrangement, would you tell me about them and how they have influenced you? (It does not have to be classical music)

I often say that, when you are young – and during a long time during your life – we are like a sponge: we are always listening or hearing various musics, sounds, noises, etc. Inside us, we are capturing all that and, one day, inspiration is coming.
In my case, I have a lot of admiration for several composers: Maurice Ravel (for his art of the orchestration), Igor Stravinsky (for his orchestral treatment), Leonard Bernstein (for his genius), John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Joe Hisaishi & George Delerue (for their movies soundtracks), Roger Boutry, Johan De Meij & Jan Van der Roost (for all they brought to Wind Band music) and also a lot of jazzmen & pop musicians…
Generally, and this could be my motto, I am for “Musical Diversity”!

6. Golden Hearts Publications is currently distributing some of your wind band and solo (and piano) works in Japan. Are there any works that you would like to bring to the attention of Japanese bands and players, or that you would particularly recommend to Japanese performers? There are works with a Japanese theme, such as “ARAIANSU,” but other works are also welcome.

I’m always working on the basis that compositions can’t delight to everybody. Except choice of styles that it depends of each person, I respect always alls the levels in my compositions : I’m composing seriously for professionals as much as for beginners. I can say that my compositions are attractive and that everyone can find on my catalog the composition he want.
Of course, a lot of them are suited for a lot of musicians.
Some examples :
– For beginners : “ETHNO POP” for young saxophonists, “S., S.., S…” for young clarinetists, “MIDWAY” for young trombonists, etc…
– For advanced soloists : “HIM” (Euphonium), “BERNARD’S SONG” (Trombone), “ARAIANSU” and “PRELUDE, CADENCE & FINAL” (Trompette), “ORO” (Violin), “CONVERGENCES” (Tuba), “LE FIL D’ARIANE” (Saxophone), etc. (All this compositions are available with Piano accompaniment and also on Orchestral Version)
– For Wind Band : “LE LIVRE DES MERVEILES DU MONDE”, “FIRST SYMPHONY” (in 3 Movements), “THE FIRE DANCE”, “DE SABLE FRETTE D’ARGENT”, …

And, very soon, several new compositions : “ANATOLI KAY DYSI” (Clarinet), “DMITRI’S DANCES” (Euphonium), “DE POURPRE ET D’OR” & “BIRTH OF A BAND” (Wind Band), etc.

7. Would tell me about your future goals (or what you would like to work on in the future)?

The more interesting in composition is what you never made ! Of course, I’m continuing to conduct orchestras and to compose but never like a machine : I’m always searching new sounds for instruments or orchestra … and also new original mixed projects. Advances in technology permit us a lot of possibilities but, in same time, connecting people from various artistic esthetics is very important for me !

8. I have the impression that many of your works have been performed in Asia, especially in Korea. And you are highly regarded worldwide. What advice would you give to young composers and composers who want to transcend national borders and be active around the world?

The only one advice that I can suggest is to always work hard and seriously ! There’s not recipe to be well-know and reputed. Sometimes of course, some meetings or the chance can help you for realize projects but, in most cases, composers must to be original or creative to make the difference. And that require usually a lot of work, time and energy, especially if they must then to introduce themselves to be knowed.

That’s all for this interview. Thank you very much Mr. Vanbeselaere!

Some of Mr. Vanbeselaere’s scores are printed and distributed in Japan by Golden Hearts Publications.
