[English]

After finishing the concert with the Kyushu Wind Orchestra, would you tell me the impression of the entire concert?

This concert marked my fifth year as the principal guest conductor of the KWO. I think it was an outstanding concert, my musicians played at the very top of their level. I felt very proud walking of that podium, this was certainly one of the best, or maybe even the best concert we have done since my first appearance in 2014.

Would you tell me about the moment that was particularly impressive at this concert?

The finale of Echoes of San Marco for me was very special, with eight extra brass players in the hall (on the balconies) and of the church organ, the sound was magnificent.

Would you tell the short hint on playing and conducting for bands and conductors who will play the works played this concert.

Echoes of San Marco

Echoes of San Marco was composed as homage to Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli (1554 ? 1612), the renaissance maestro who was well known for his use of double wind ensembles, mirroring each other sonically in the awe-inspiring San Marco Cathedral in Venice, Italy. Majestic brass fanfares from two different locations in the back of the concert hall mark the opening of the work: we hear fragments from Giovanni Gabrieli’s majestic Canzon Septimi Toni a 8 from the Sacrae Symphoniae (1597), originally written for two four-part brass choirs. Several groups within the orchestra, such as a double-reed choir, a saxophone quartet, a horn quartet, euphonium/tuba quartet and two sets of tubular bells mimic the brass choirs, while the clarinet choir and a flute quartet prolong the echoes with mysterious cluster chords. So in this piece, you need two brass quartets that are placed in the concert hall, preferably on a balcony. They are far apart and far from the stage, so it can be a little difficult to conduct them. These players only see you from the back, because I also need to conduct the players in the orchestra.

Two-Bone Concerto

The tempos in this piece are crucial, you have to find the right tempo which is the best for the two soloists. Half way the piece, as you may have noticed, both players move to the left and the right of the stage, that’s sort of a theatrical effect, and they play from both sides of the stage, together with the percussion, a set of steel drums, a cajon and congas. This is also hard to keep everybody together.

Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, I made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer focuses on Finnish folk music.
The work opens with an impression of the pastoral landscape of Ostrobothnia, an elongated area on the west coast of Finland. The majority of the people speak Swedish, and their music is still clearly influenced by Swedish folk music.
As in Spring, the music continues with a polka, based on the opening bars of Suomis Sang (‘Song of Finland’). After a brief horn interlude, a saxophone quartet plays from behind the stage Ant han dansa med mej (‘Ant was dancing with me’), while the orchestra starts up an ostinato bass line that marks the transition to the finale.
Summer is not particularly hard to conduct, in the beginning you have to help the English horn a bit, with the long extended solo lines.

Clair de Lune was originally written for piano, being the 3rd movement of the Suite Bergamasque by French composer Claude Debussy.
In this piece, you have to follow the soloist, it is very delicate and elegant music. The trombone is almost like a vocal soloist, a singer. And especially Jorgen van Rijen is a master in ‘singing’ on his instrument.

Fifty Shades of E is a musical expedition to discover the myriad nuances of the note E. Throughout the work, the E keeps one foot on centre stage while venturing out through various movements. From its basic tonal functions to when it shimmers under a lyrical guise, the E is seen, heard and experienced from every aural angle. In a free cadenza, six solo woodwinds break the mood by visiting and embellishing the main theme, one after another, from high to low. One doesn’t need to conduct this section – they can all play in their own free tempo. The piece is quite demanding for everybody in the orchestra, there are some very difficult passages, but I think they did a terrific job.

Please give your message to audiences who visited this concert.

I hope that our audience had a wonderful afternoon. The program has a lot of variety, in different styles, and we had our fabulous two soloists. I hope you will all come to our next concerts, when we will play a completely different program, for sure!

Next I will ask about the symphony No. 1 “The Lord of The Ring” that greeted the 30th anniversary this year. First of all, it is the first question. For the past 30 years, I think that there were many opportunities to conduct this work by yourself, how did the approach to the work change in yourself?

I have conducted the Symphony No. 1 “The Lord of The Rings” hundreds of times over the last 30 years, but I must admit that I would still make small changes, even after 30 years, to try to make it even sounds better, or more beautiful. However, my recent concert with United States Marine Band for me was an absolute highlight in my career. The interpretation that I used that day is really where the piece is now for me. This was the ultimate performance, I would not change anything at all anymore!

This is the second question about “The Lord of The Ring”. Look back over the past 30 years, would you tell me what is the most important thing that the work brought to you until today?

The piece has truly changed my life in a very nice way. It has me make traveling all over the world, making lots of friends and being able to play with some of the best ensembles in the world. This has been an incredible experience, and I am very grateful that I can have this success right now, when I am still in good health, so I can enjoy it to the fullest.

Finally, please give your message to your fans in Japan.

Japan has become my favorite country to travel to, for the people, the food, the very high level of playing – I always feel very much at ease. I receive so much respect and excitement from both the musicians as well as the audience, which is truly inspiring for me. I hope to see you all back next year, when I will premier my Symphony No. 5 in Osaka, on April 27 of 2019. And I hope to be back many, many times!
