(Wind Band Press)

1. Why did you thought want to become a composer?

I began playing music from an early age, when I was 6 years old. My first instrument was Piano, afterwards I studied Euphonium and finally Percussion.
My professional musical beginnings were as a concert pianist, not only playing many concerts as soloist but also forming chamber music groups, as well as Conductor, directing Wind Bands from an early age.
Although from a very young age I started to improvise and write songs, to the maturity point in which I needed to express what I listened in my head…, this was the moment I decided to be a professional composer.

2. “La Passio de Crist” is particularly popular in Japan. Please tell me the background (or reason) of composing this work and important points in playing.

My Symphony No. 2, THE PASSION OF CHRIST, is very popular around the world, not only in Japan. Backwards in time of composition, I had the idea of composing Symphonic Music to describe the life of Jesus Christ.
I knew there was anything written originally for Wind Band about this
religious theme or oratory, where the greatest and currents composers from our history have already composed within the theme, but for Symphonic Orchestra.
I had the opportunity of receiving a commission from the Federation of Music Societies in the Valencian Community, for a composition with a symphonic magnitude and extreme difficulty, the reason was because it was going to be created the Federal Band, with the best musicians of every Band in the Valencian Community, a Wind Band with 150 musicians.
Definitely this was the most motivating moment to compose that piece I already had in mind years ago.
So, I got to work, I composed it and the premiere was in 2002.

3. You composed as many works as not only for wind band, which work was a turning point in your life as a composer?

As I said before, I found the need to comunicate with the world and offer my music. From my first composition to those that I improvised on the piano when I was young or even a child, I felt people receiving excellent sensations and were drawn to listen my music, that is to say, they were pleased appreciating the music that was being created by me.
My earliest Symphonic Compositions happened the same, I realized the audience appreciated listening them, and this was what most hitched me for devoting myself to the composition.
With no doubt, the composition which made me known and gave me the popularity was the No. 2 Symphony, THE PASSION OF CHRIST. As soon as this saw the light, the Orchestras were interested in it. Suddenly this music marked a before and an after for the repertoire of original music written for Wind Band and for this reason I was requested from all over the world to show it and offer my technical and musical skills for all the musicians interested to evolve in composition for Wind Band.

4. You are also active as a conductor. As a composer and conductor, please tell me your future goals.

Indeed, I find myself filling in this interview in Riga, Latvia, where I conducted the “Orchestra Riga” on the 14th of April.
The following week I will conduct the Wind Band that I hold, in a concert from Stephen Melillo.
I go abroad frequently to conduct all over the world and regarding my future compositions, I have just come from two premieres. Last March 25th had its premiere my composition THE NEVERENDING DREAM for Symphonic Band in Luxembourg, and the 7th of April it was premiered another composition titled THE GIANT OF WOOD for Double Bass and Symphonic Orchestra in Valencia, Spain, which is already requested for transcription to Double Bass and Symphonic Band.
I keep in mind two Symphonic compositions, one it will be premiered in July 2017 in Tenerife, Spain and the following in February 2018 in Huelva, Spain.

5. From Spain, many composers who compose excellent wind music works are produced. Please tell me the characteristics of the Spanish composer and the wind music situation (such as market size and popular work trends).

In Spain and more specific in the Valencian Community where I come from exists a considerable tradition of a high level and involvement Symphonic Bands. This is the reason why many composers are interested in a background both in composing and conducting, due to the need to create new compositions and even for conducting them.
And definitely, from this development emerges many others high qualified compositions.

6. Please advise young composers and conductors in Japan.

First of all be trained with seriousness, disciplined and commitment values for this art of composing and conducting.
Secondly, to realize their works with a Symphonic treatment as if it was about a Symphonic Orchestra, thereby the music reaches the highest levels.
The Symphonic Band no longer has anything to envy the Symphonic Orchestras.
I would say that the future music is the development of Symphonic Bands, the Symphonic Orchestras are anchored in the past, the repertoires are refused to renewal, generally because their audience want to continue listening the classics.
In respect of the Wind Orchestra, this does not happen, it has the opposite effect, the conductors and the audience pretend to innovate and render the latest compositions.
Perhaps, this is the reason why I herald Symphonic Bands will be the future of Symphonic Music.

7. Please give your message to your Japanese fans.

When I compose and conduct, my only purpose is to make the world, this is my premise. I do composition to make happy anyone wishing to listen to music.
My pieces are sensations, it is music that I write with my heart and pretend to thrill the audience.
Nevertheless, when I conduct I enjoy giving the pleasure to whom it listen the concert. to revel and feel the happiness of receiving those vibrations that can not be defined.
I would like to motivate my japoneses fans, to revel when they were surrounded by music to find happiness and the meaning of life in it.
