1. Why did you thought want to become a euphonium player?

I started playing when I was eight years old when the brass teacher at my first school came to visit our class to ask if anyone was interested in having lessons. He immediately gave me a euphonium to try and I was hooked from then on! I’ve always liked listening to music and singing from a very early age, so the idea of being part of performances alongside other children was very exciting for me. Almost straight away I started listening to recordings of other euphonium players, Bob and Nick Childs, Steven Mead as well as some of the previous generation ? John Clough (Black Dyke’s solo euphonium from the early 1960’s until 1988), Lyndon Baglin (same era but played with the Fairey Band, Brighouse and Sun Life) and Trevor Groom (similar era ? solo euphonium with GUS Band). These recordings provided my first ideas behind what a ‘euphonium sound’ really was and started to shape the concept of how I want to hear myself today.

2. Are there euphonium works that you particularly like?

I like to keep as wide a variety of solo repertoire as possible. Even though I like to challenge myself with new works, I also like to perform repertoire from the older, more traditional side. This means that over the last twenty years my personal performance repertoire hasn’t changed as such, it has certainly grown to have more options though!! I’m probably the same as a lot of professional players in that my favourite pieces are often the works I am currently preparing for performances which at the moment are: James Curnow ? Symphonic Variants; Jesus Santandreu – The Bestiarium of the Lost Dark Matter; Max Bruch – Kol Nidrei (originally for cello); Peter Meechan ? Origins Concerto.

3. What is the difference between the player in the band and the player as the soloist?

There are many similarities between these roles as well as many differences, but here a few thoughts:

As a soloist, your projection of sound and stylistic statements are paramount, you must musically lead the performance. Never be boring, take musical risks, draw the audience’s attention towards your performance from the moment you walk on stage to the moment you leave it.

As a band player, there are also times when this applies, but there are many more times when it is essential to carefully listen to you colleagues and achieve a blend of sound, dynamic and style. For the ensemble musician, effective listening is as important a skill as playing with a good sound and using fluent technique. If you don’t listen with great care then you are simply not being an effective part of the band!!

4. You have a brilliant career, when do you think it was the turning point of life as an euphonium player?

I don’t think there was any one point that I can say was THE moment when I decided to pursue a career as a euphonium player, more a collection of opportunities and experiences that have led me down the path of the last thirty years.

I was very lucky from an early to attend a music school where music lessons were a regular part of daily life and I was surrounded by young musicians who had similar interests and ambitions to me. I was also blessed with fantastic teachers from a young age. I had lessons from age 12 with Bill Millar. His simple and clear way of practising and developing technique routines have been a key part of forming my own practise regime and followed on into my teaching too. I started having regular lessons with Steven Mead when I was 16. His drive, enthusiasm and playing inspired me to find new repertoire and to constantly push myself to achieve more than I had previously, and that is certainly a major factor in being successful. Also during school and University I had lots of contact with both Bob and Nick Childs, through lessons, the National Youth Brass Band and being conducted by them both in various bands. Their approach to careers, music making, playing as a soloist and playing as a bandsman have always been a major influence and inspiration, both as a young player and a professional.

In short, I have been extremely lucky to have benefited from the teaching and experiences of the literally the best people in the business and have never took that for granted. Every young player has their ‘heroes’, and I certainly had mine, but I also made a conscious effort to be an individual. I listened and took in as much information as possible and over time I have mixed the various concepts, ideas, routines and experiences to form the musician and career I am and have today.

5. You became the musical director of Brighouse & Rastrick Band, how is your compatibility with the band?

It’s very exciting to be working with B&R as their musical director. At first it was rather daunting, the responsibility of maintaining the quality they’ve had throughout the band’s 136-year history is a big job. But the sheer ability and musical spirit of the current cast of players has proved a joy to work with and I’m confident that the time ahead will be successful both in the competitive field and on the concert stage. It’s also a real pleasure to be working with Professor David King again, he’s been a direct influence on my own career for a long time now and his addictive brand of music making is fantastic to be part of.

6. Will you increase your activities as a conductor in the future?

That is definitely the plan, I’ve been busy with freelance band conducting for some years now, but with the added exposure and promotion that performances with Brighouse & Rastrick brings, I seem to be doing more and more conducting both in the UK and abroad.

7. Please give your message to your Japanese fans.

My message to players of all ages and standards is to continue to play music and give performances with happiness and enjoyment at the front of everything. My most successful performances have been those where I smile the most! Also, I have used the word ‘inspiration’ several times in this interview and this is what I would advise any player to try to find. Inspiration drives you to practise when sometimes you don’t want to, it drives you to push yourself when you’re not certain and it forms your ambitions for your musical life.
