3.「Rust Belt」

「Rust Belt」

1. Why do you think you wanted to become a composer?
The answer:

During the time my family was living in Armidale, Australia, my father was a keen amateur recorder player. He enrolled me and my brothers in a recorder group run by our nextdoor neighbour. When I was seven I wrote my first piece. It was very simple, for two descant recorders and only ten bars long. But my father was surprised and thrilled. I still remember the joy I felt at his reaction. I think it was this that started me on the road to becoming a composer.

2. The new work “Rust Belt” has been completed and the premiere has already been held in the United States and the UK. What is the reaction of the audience?
The answer:

The United States Air Force Academy Band premiered Rust Belt on February 13th this year. I was present at that performance and the audience reaction was very enthusiastic. The band took this piece on tour throughout Colorado and Utah and the conductor told me that at each venue the audience loved it. A friend in Manchester, UK for the Royal Northern College of Music performance on March 23rd reported that it earned a standing ovation.

3. Please tell me the reason for composing “Rust Belt” and the background of the piece.
The answer:

In 2016 Colonel David Price of the Air Force Academy Band approached me about writing an 8-10 minute work to showcase their two finest trumpeters, Senior Airman Adrian Holton and Master Sergeant Tim Allums. I knew Adrian from my work with Summit Brass and was aware of his technical prowess and musicianship. I also knew of the band’s fine reputation and that of Captain Shanti Simon who was to direct the premiere. So I was confident the new piece would receive a fine performance.

The ‘Rust Belt’ is a term for the region straddling the upper North-Eastern United States, the Great Lakes and the Midwest, referring to economic decline, population loss, and urban decay due to the shrinking of its once-powerful industrial sector. Rust Belt was inspired by a photo essay featuring images from this region such as abandoned factories and derelict neighborhoods. I wanted the music to suggest the vibrancy, the ‘blue-collar’ energy and optimism that used to permeate those places. Rock music provided the soundtrack for the industrial era, roughly from the 50s to the early 80s, and so perhaps there is some rock influence here. And in keeping with the industrial theme, metallic percussion such as the anvil and steel drums feature prominently, along with the siren. The music seeks to evoke the inhabitants’ nostalgia for the good years and their yearning for a return to relevance and dignity.

4. You have composed as many works for other ensembles as for wind band. Which work was a turning point in your life as a composer?
The answer:

That is a good question – and the answer is a little complicated! In the year 2000 I wrote Aue!, my first ever work for wind ensemble. Timothy Reynish, visiting New Zealand, had heard my orchestral piece Hikurangi Sunrise on the radio and when he had returned to the UK he offered me a commission for a 7 minute work for band. I had heard and enjoyed wind ensemble works when attending the Eastman School in the late 90s. But I had never considered composing for this medium since I knew the wind band movement was not strong in New Zealand at that time. Aue! was a success and I learnt a lot from writing it. However it was my next piece, also commissioned by Tim Reynish with his wife, Hilary that was even more of a turning point. L’homme arme: Variations, dedicated to the memory of their son William, has now received more than 70 performances worldwide – though I don’t think it has yet been performed in Japan. It really put me on the map as a composer and was instrumental in my decision to move to the United States in 2006.

5. You are already active worldwide, please tell me your future goals.
The answer:

My main goal is what it has always been: to keep growing as a composer. I aim to increase the expressive range and power of my music so that it may connect with increasing numbers of conductors, performers and audiences. It’s only about 20 years since my music has been reaching a wide audience. So I feel that, musically speaking, I am in my youth with a long way to go to reach my full potential.

6. Please advise young composers in Japan.
The answer:

The advice I give my students and all young composers is not very original, but I think it is nonetheless valid. It is threefold: be true to yourself, don’t limit yourself, promote yourself. Write music that expresses who you are as a person and a musician. Don’t adopt a style of writing that doesn’t ring true to you merely for convenience or to please others.

However, being true to yourself doesn’t mean you should not experiment with different styles and influences! It is so valuable to imitate the work of composers you admire and to experiment using styles that are unfamiliar to you, or even sometimes that do not immediately appeal to you. If it helps, label such pieces ‘exercises’ or ‘experiments’ to differentiate them from more ‘personal’ pieces. In opening your mind in this way you may integrate some of those styles into your own musical vocabulary and in this process they will be changed to become uniquely yours. Other styles will never feel right and you will move on.

I do not go out of my way to listen to jazz or rock. With some exceptions neither of those genres holds strong appeal for me. Yet I can see the influence of both jazz and rock in my own music. How did it get in there? All kinds of music surrounds me – on the radio or television – in shopping centres – and elements of it have become incorporated. So has the traditional Polynesian music that I experienced in an earlier stage of my life. I do not seek to bring out these elements. They emerge as part of the composition process.

A young Japanese composer has a rich heritage that he or she can draw on. I remember in Sweden in 2003 hearing a piece by Ya Goto. It was very beautiful – evocative and moving. There was something unique about it that made a strong connection with me. I can only think that it owed this special quality to an aesthetic drawn from the composer’s Japanese heritage. One day I would love to analyse it and try to discover what made it so effective. Then perhaps I will be indirectly incorporating an element of Japanese culture into my own composing language!

Self-promotion has not come easily to me and I am still not very good at it – as evidenced by my very out-of-date website! But no matter how uncomfortable it may feel, all composers should make an effort to put their music in front of conductors, performers and all those interested in new music. They should speak about it on radio or social media when they have the chance. Modern life is so full of distractions – of competing stimuli. Grabbing the spotlight even for one second is difficult. You might feel that your pieces have sufficient quality to find that spotlight of their own accord. Usually that is not true, no matter how fine they are. My view is that if you feel your music is good it is worth fighting very hard to make it heard.
